Best Front Sight Pusher: Why Most Pistols Do Not Need One, and the Three That Do
Before you pay extra for a front-and-rear sight pusher, look under your slide. Glock, Smith & Wesson M&P and most Sig P-series front sights are held by a screw or hex nut from inside the slide. They are not dovetailed, a pusher does not touch them, and a 3/16-inch nut driver removes them in seconds. A front sight pusher only matters on pistols with a dovetailed front: 1911s, CZs, HKs, Sig P226 and P320, Beretta 92 and a few others. If that is you, here are the tools whose front adapter actually works.
Front-and-rear picks
- Best front and rear: Wheeler Handgun Sight Tool – full capture holds the short front section of the slide.
- Steel front and rear: TRUGLO Steel Sight Tool – no flex on tight front dovetails.
- Glock with dovetail front: Real Avid Universal Glock Sight Pusher – for aftermarket dovetailed Glock fronts.
- Budget front and rear: NcSTAR VISM VTUFNR – aluminum, fine for non-seized fronts.
- Front and rear, heavy duty generic: Heavy-Duty Sight Pusher, front and rear, fits most slides – a generic Amazon tool with a front position; check recent reviews.

Why front sights are harder to push
The front dovetail is near the muzzle, where the slide is shorter and often tapered. The clamp has less flat area to hold and the push point is closer to the end of the slide, so the slide wants to tip. Full-capture clamps handle this better than two-jaw clamps. Tape the slide, clamp as far forward as the flat allows, and push slowly. Front sights are also frequently set-screwed or thread-locked; loosen and degrease first as in how to use a sight pusher.

Wheeler Handgun Sight Tool
The capture clamp is what makes it the front-sight pick: it holds the short front section of a Sig or 1911 slide without tipping, and the steel block moves tight front dovetails. Flat shoe for most fronts. The one tool for rear and front on a mixed safe.

TRUGLO Steel Sight Tool
Steel frame and block, front and rear. For a tight Sig P226 or 1911 front dovetail where an aluminum tool would flex, this is the durable choice.

Heavy-Duty front and rear generic
Several near-identical aluminum tools on Amazon advertise a front position and fit most slides. They work for non-seized fronts. Check that the current listing’s recent reviews are not reporting stripped threads before buying one, and grease the screw.

The Glock front sight: nut driver, not pusher
Glock front sights are held by a single hex nut under the slide. The Glock OEM front sight tool or the Real Avid 4-in-1 Glock tool has the 3/16-inch driver. Blue thread locker on the new nut, snug, done. Details in best sight pusher for Glock.

FAQ
Do sight pushers work on front sights?
Only on dovetailed front sights and only with a tool that has a front adapter. Screw-in fronts use a nut driver.
Is the Glock front sight dovetailed?
No, the factory front is screw-in. Some aftermarket Glock fronts are dovetailed and do use a pusher.
Why does my slide tip when pushing the front sight?
The clamp has less slide to hold near the muzzle. Clamp as far forward as possible on flat steel, or use a full-capture tool.
