Notice about the shooting requirement

Many students have questions about the shooting requirements for this class. Rest assured that the North Carolina shooting proficiency requirements are well within the abilities of everyone! Our target is the same as that which is used by most law enforcement agencies — the standard B-27 target. This target is about the size of the average person from the waist up. You are required to hit this target only 21 out of 30 bullets fired. Any difficulties encountered will be due to your selection of your personal firearm. ANYONE can pass this part of the class when matched with the correct handgun. In the remote case that you have a malfunction with your firearm or difficulty shooting your selected handgun, we will provide you with a handgun and ammunition that will ensure your successful completion of the course of fire.

We will return one hundred percent of your money if you fail the range qualification, or we will work with you until you pass.

No cowboy-styled handguns allowed — no exceptions

Sorry, but we do not allow single-action-only cowboy styled revolvers. We do not consider this type of firearm to be adequate for defensive purposes in the hands of the average person. It is also very slow to load and reload, therefore holding up the rest of the shooters while they wait for you to reload.

The only time we cancel or delay a class is when it is unsafe to shoot, such as lightning or ice.

What you will need to bring

If you do not have a handgun, contact me to make arrangements for a loaner.

  • Good quality handgun and 50 rounds of ammunition
  • Eye safety glasses and hearing protection
  • Holster (no cross-draw or shoulder holsters allowed due to safety concerns) and a belt for your holster
  • Hat or cap with a brim (to deflect hot spent shells and keep them from getting between your safety glasses and eyes)
  • Loose fitting clothing with pockets, or a coat with pockets for ammunition and magazines
  • No sandals or open-toe shoes

Leave all firearms and ammunition in your vehicle. Please do not bring firearms or ammunition into the classroom unless instructed to do so by the instructor. The instructor reserves the right to inspect all firearms for safety and proper operation prior to their use.

Please be familiar with your handgun. You should know how to load and unload it SAFELY. If not, consider practicing prior to class. This is not the time to bring a firearm to class that you do not know how to operate. Spend some time getting familiar with the gun and how it functions, and please read your handgun manual.

The NC Concealed Handgun Carry Permit course is not a difficult course to complete. The state designed this course for the average person, not just for those with lots of experience. With our instruction and guidance, shooters with very limited or no experience do very well. Our class is presented with PowerPoint, including animated graphics and internet support.

According to Reece Trimmer, Harvard Law School graduate and former Staff Attorney/Instructor at the North Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in Salemburg, NC, trained law enforcement officers only hit their target 15% of the time in real-life shooting situations. To increase your confidence and ability to shoot accurately during an extremely stressful real-life shooting situation, I highly recommend that a shooter with little or no experience with a handgun take additional training — our Handgun Skills Clinic or Defensive Shooting Class — in addition to the Concealed Handgun Carry Permit course.
