Concealed Carry Class Near Greenville, NC: Worth the 45-Minute Drive

Greenville does not lack concealed carry classes, so we will be honest: ours is about 45 minutes away in Elm City, west on US-264. Students from Greenville, Winterville, Ayden and Farmville make that drive because of who teaches the course, a 40-year law enforcement veteran who has taught the NC Concealed Handgun Carry class since 2006. You go home with the training certificate required by G.S. 14-415.12, which you take to the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office to apply for your permit.

Laws change — this page was last reviewed October 2026 and is general information, not legal advice. The statutes behind the class are explained in our North Carolina concealed carry law guide.

The drive, honestly

From the ECU area or downtown Greenville, take US-264 West toward Wilson, then US-301 or NC-42 north into Elm City; plan on 45 minutes, a little less from Farmville. For a full-day class, that means leaving early and getting home at suppertime. We mention this because we would rather you know the trade-off than feel misled. If the drive is the problem, skip it entirely by organizing a private class of five or more and we will come to Greenville.

What the day looks like

The NC Concealed Handgun Carry class is the state-approved course, a minimum of eight hours of instruction and range time.

  1. Morning: safety and the law. Handgun safety and handling, then the North Carolina statutes: who qualifies under G.S. 14-415.12, the application, the prohibited places in 14-415.11(c), the duty to inform officers, the alcohol rule and reciprocity with other states.
  2. Midday: use of deadly force. The Castle Doctrine and stand-your-ground law, G.S. 14-51.2 through 14-51.4, taught through how real shootings are investigated and charged. This block is why many students say the day was worth more than the permit.
  3. Afternoon: range. Marksmanship fundamentals, then the live-fire qualification. Students who have never fired a handgun pass this every month with the coaching they get on the line.
  4. Wrap-up: carrying for real. Holsters, concealment, drawing safely, and the application process at your county sheriff’s office.

Why Greenville students choose this class

Chris Raper spent more than 40 years in law enforcement and has taught this course without interruption since January 2006. He is an NC DOJ-certified Firearms Safety Instructor, an NRA-certified Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun instructor and Range Safety Officer, and a graduate of Massad Ayoob’s Lethal Force Institute, the program that set the standard for teaching armed citizens the legal aftermath of self-defense. Several of our Greenville students work in health care at the hospital or teach at the university; what they tell us afterward is that the legal instruction was specific and practical in a way they had not found closer to home. See the instructor qualifications page and the student feedback page.

Applying at the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office

Greenville and Pitt County residents apply to the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office Weapons Division at 100 New Hope Road, Greenville, NC 27834.

  • Start the new-permit application online through the county’s permit portal; the Sheriff’s Office moved to online applications several years ago.
  • Fees are $90 for a new permit and $75 for a renewal, non-refundable. Fingerprinting is scheduled separately through the office.
  • Bring the original training certificate from our class, a valid NC driver’s license or ID showing your current Pitt County address, and any supporting documents the office requests, such as a DD-214 for veterans.
  • Questions go to the Weapons Division at 252-902-2800 or sheriff.gunpermits@pittcountync.gov.
  • Under G.S. 14-415.15 the sheriff has 45 days from a complete application to issue or deny.

A note for the university community: the permit does not authorize carry on ECU property or any other educational property under G.S. 14-269.2. The only exception for permit holders is keeping the handgun in a closed compartment inside a locked vehicle, which we explain in detail in where you cannot carry concealed in North Carolina.

Making the most of the day

Because Greenville students invest more travel time than most, we encourage them to come with specific questions written down. Common ones from Pitt County: carrying while working at the hospital, which comes down to the posted-property rule in G.S. 14-415.11(c)(8) and employer policy; carrying to and from the university as an employee, which runs into the school property statute; and what the permit means when driving to the coast through several counties. We answer all of them in class. Bring a working handgun, eye and ear protection, closed-toe shoes and a photo ID; we will tell you the ammunition count when you register, and if you do not own a handgun yet, call ahead. Students who want more range time before the course often start with our handgun skills clinic.

Private classes in Greenville and Pitt County

For five or more students, Chris travels to you. Medical practices, church security teams, neighborhood groups and families in Greenville have hosted private classes, which eliminates the drive and lets the discussion focus on your situations.
