Rear Sight Stuck and the Pusher Will Not Move It? Do This Before You Strip the Screw
The push screw is tight, the sight has not budged, and the next quarter turn is going to strip something. Stop. A seized rear sight is normal on several popular pistols and the fix is a sequence, not more force. Followed in order it frees almost every sight without damaging the slide, the sight or the tool. Skipped, it is how budget pushers end up in the one-star reviews.
Why sights seize
- Set screw still tight. Most aftermarket and many factory rear sights (M&P 2.0, Novak-style 1911, Sig) have a set screw bearing on the dovetail. It is the most common reason a sight will not move and the most often forgotten.
- Factory press fit. S&W and Sig press sights in hard on purpose so they never shift under recoil.
- Thread locker in the dovetail. Some factories and some previous owners put thread locker on the dovetail itself. It glues the sight in.
- Carbon and old grease. Years of fouling in the dovetail acts like an adhesive.
- Corrosion. Light rust between steel sight and steel slide on older or neglected pistols.

The sequence
- Back off the push screw so there is no load on the sight. Leave the slide clamped.
- Find and loosen the set screw. Top of the sight, rear face of the sight, or underneath (slide out of the clamp to check). Two full turns out. If the screw is stripped, see below.
- Degrease the dovetail. Brake cleaner or a strong solvent on a patch along both edges where the sight meets the slide. Let it wick in.
- Heat. A hair dryer on the slide for one to two minutes. Hot enough to be uncomfortable to hold, not hot enough to affect the finish. Heat expands the slide slightly and breaks thread locker’s grip.
- Penetrating oil. A drop on each dovetail edge. Wait twenty minutes. Thirty if you suspect thread locker.
- Shock the bond. Slide on a bench block, brass punch on the sight base (not the blade), two or three sharp taps in the removal direction. You are not trying to move the sight; you are cracking whatever is holding it. See the punch method for setup.
- Back to the pusher. Re-clamp, seat the shoe on the sight body, push with steady pressure. It will usually move now.
- Still stuck? Repeat heat and oil once more. If it does not move after a second cycle, the dovetail may be peened or the sight thread-locked with a high-strength compound; a gunsmith with a heat gun and a press is the next step, and it is cheaper than a new slide.

If the set screw is stripped
Try the next size up in a torx or hex bit tapped gently into the stripped head. If that fails, a left-hand drill bit of the screw’s minor diameter will usually back it out under heat. On the Glock adjustable rear sight, the fix is the correct OEM screwdriver; see Glock rear sight screw stripped.

The pistols that seize most
Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0 and Shield, Sig P320 and P365 with factory sights, and 1911s with Novak-style rear sights whose set screw nobody loosened. If you own one of these, buy a steel-block pusher from the start; our picks are in best sight pusher for M&P, best sight pusher for Sig Sauer and best sight pusher for 1911.
Tools that survive a seized sight
Aluminum push-screw threads strip under the force a seized sight needs; steel ones do not. The TRUGLO steel tool and the Wheeler are the two we point people to. If you already own a budget pusher, the sequence above gets most sights moving before the threads give up; grease the push screw first.

FAQ
Can I use a torch to free a stuck sight?
No. A hair dryer or heat gun on low. Open flame or high heat damages finishes and can affect night-sight vials.
Will penetrating oil hurt a tritium night sight?
No. Keep it to the dovetail edges and wipe the sight after. The vials are sealed.
My pusher screw already stripped. Now what?
Run the heat, oil and brass-punch steps, then finish with a steel-block tool or the punch method. Replace the budget tool rather than re-tapping it.
