Best Sight Pusher for M&P Shield and M&P 2.0: Steel Block or Do Not Bother
If there is one pistol that separates real sight pushers from the cheap ones, it is the Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0. The factory rear sight is pressed in harder than almost anything else on the market, often with a set screw on top, and the Shield’s narrow slide adds a clamp-fit problem. Forum threads about stripped push screws are disproportionately M&P threads. Here are the tools that actually move an M&P sight, and the sequence that gets it done without breaking anything.
M&P picks
- Best for M&P 2.0: TRUGLO Steel Rear and Front Sight Tool – all steel, nothing to flex or strip.
- Best for Shield and mixed safes: Wheeler Handgun Sight Tool – full capture adjusts to the narrow Shield slide; steel push block.
- Budget, with caveats: Patch Universal – works on M&Ps whose sights are not seized; strips on the ones that are.

Why M&P sights are so tight
S&W cuts the M&P dovetail to a tight tolerance and presses the sight in with force. Many 2.0 rear sights also have a set screw bearing on the dovetail floor. The combination means the breakaway force is well above what a cast aluminum pusher with aluminum threads can deliver before the threads gall. This is not a defect in the pistol; it is why the sights never shift under recoil. It just means you need a steel load path to move them. Our tool-by-tool breakdown of push block material is in best sight pusher tools.

The M&P stuck-sight sequence
- Clear and field strip. Find the set screw on top of the rear sight and back it out two full turns. Skipping this is the number one cause of stripped pushers on M&Ps.
- Degrease both dovetail edges with brake cleaner on a patch.
- Warm the slide with a hair dryer for a minute, apply penetrating oil to the dovetail edges, wait twenty minutes.
- Tape the slide top, clamp on flat steel behind the serrations, seat the flat shoe on the sight body.
- Push with steady pressure. If the screw starts to feel like it is grinding rather than resisting, stop.
- If it has not moved: set the slide on a bench block and give the sight base two or three sharp taps with a brass punch to break the bond, then return to the pusher. It will move.
The general method and shoe placement are in how to use a sight pusher; the punch-only method is in how to remove a rear sight without a sight pusher.

TRUGLO Steel Rear and Front Sight Tool
Steel frame, steel block, steel screw. It is the tool whose owner reviews do not contain the phrase “stripped on my M&P”. It does front sights too, which matters because M&P fronts are dovetailed on many models. Heavier and plainer than the Wheeler, and exactly what a seized 2.0 sight needs.

Wheeler Handgun Sight Tool
The Shield’s narrow slide is where fixed-jaw pushers sit off-center and the shoe lands on the slide. The Wheeler’s capture clamp adjusts to the Shield and holds it square, and the steel push block handles 2.0 sights after the set-screw-and-heat sequence above. If your safe also holds a Glock or a Sig, this is the one tool to buy.

Patch Universal, with caveats
Plenty of M&P owners have changed sights with the Patch. Plenty have stripped it. The difference is whether the sight was seized and whether the set screw was loosened first. If you already own one, run the full sequence above and grease the push threads; if you are buying for an M&P specifically, spend more once.

FAQ
Why will my sight pusher not move my M&P 2.0 rear sight?
The set screw is probably still tight, and the sight is pressed in hard. Loosen the screw, degrease, heat and oil, tap with a brass punch to break the bond, then push with a steel-block tool.
Does the M&P have a set screw on the rear sight?
Most M&P 2.0 and many Shield rear sights do, on top of the sight. Back it out two turns before pushing.
Will a Glock pusher work on an M&P?
No. M&P sights are flat-backed and need a flat shoe; Glock pushers ship with an angled shoe and a Glock-profile clamp.
