Patch Heavy Duty Universal Sight Pusher Review: Why the Amazon Bestseller Strips, and How to Stop It

With more than 6,000 reviews, the Patch Heavy Duty Universal Dovetail Rear Sight Pusher is the sight pusher most people end up buying. It is cheap, it is two-sided, and it fits most flat-sided slides. It is also the tool behind most of the “my pusher stripped” posts in gun forums. Both things are true. Here is what it does well, exactly where it fails, and the two habits that make it last long enough to be worth it.

Verdict

Buy it if your pistols are Glock, Taurus, Canik, Walther or anything that does not press sights in tight, and you will change sights a few times, not weekly. Skip it if you own an M&P 2.0, a Sig with factory sights, or a rounded-slide pistol; buy the Wheeler. It is our budget pick in best sight pusher tools for that reason and no other.

What you get

Clamp Two-sided, fixed height
Frame Aluminum
Push block Aluminum body with steel tip
Shoes Flat shoe plus an angled insert for Glock-style sights
Front sights Rear only
Fits Most flat-sided slides: Glock, M&P, XD, Taurus, Canik; rounded slides can slip

What it does well

For the price of a box of ammunition it does the job a hammer and punch do, without the slip. The two-sided clamp holds a Glock or XD slide square, the angled insert works on Glock OEM and aftermarket angled sights, and for a pistol whose sights come out with moderate force it is a three-minute job. Thousands of owners have changed sights with it exactly once and been happy.

Where it fails

We read through the one- to three-star reviews. Three patterns:

  • Stripped push screw threads. The frame is aluminum. When a sight is seized (M&P 2.0, some Sigs, anything with a tightened set screw), the force needed exceeds what aluminum threads hold and they strip. This is the number one complaint.
  • Clamp slips on rounded slides. The jaws are flat. A Sig P320 or a rounded 1911 slide rocks in them and the sight goes in crooked or the slide gets marked.
  • Shoe marks sights. Using the flat shoe on an angled sight, or pushing on the blade instead of the body, crushes polymer and marks steel. This is user error, but the manual does not warn you.

Two habits that double its life

  1. Grease the push screw threads with a dab of anti-seize or gun grease before every use. Dry aluminum threads under load gall and strip; greased ones do not.
  2. Degrease and, if stuck, heat the dovetail before pushing. Brake cleaner on the dovetail edges roughly halves the force needed. If the sight still will not move, a hair dryer and penetrating oil for twenty minutes, then a light tap with a brass punch to break the bond, then back to the pusher. Never just crank harder.

Also loosen any set screw first, use the angled insert on angled sights, and seat the shoe on the sight body. The full procedure is in how to use a sight pusher.

Patch vs Wheeler

The Wheeler costs more and fixes every failure above: full slide capture instead of two flat jaws, a steel push block instead of aluminum, and polymer jaw pads. If you only ever push easy sights, you will not notice the difference. The first time you meet a seized sight you will. Side by side in Wheeler vs Patch sight pusher.

FAQ

Does the Patch sight pusher work on Glock?

Yes, with the angled insert. Clamp behind the Gen 5 front serrations.

Does it work on a Sig P320?

Sometimes. The flat jaws can slip on the rounded P320 slide. A full-capture clamp like the Wheeler is the safer choice for Sigs.

Why did the screw strip?

Dry aluminum threads under the force of a seized sight. Grease the threads, degrease the dovetail, and loosen any set screw before pushing.
