How much does a sight pusher cost: budget, mid-tier and gunsmith grade

How Much Does a Sight Pusher Cost? Three Tiers and What You Give Up at Each

Sight pushers span a wide price range for what looks like the same clamp-and-screw tool, and the price mostly tracks one thing: how much of the load path is steel. Here are the three tiers, what you get at each, and how the cost compares to paying a gunsmith or renting. We do not print prices because Amazon changes them weekly; the “check price” buttons show today’s.

The three tiers

Tier Roughly costs like Construction Good for Gives up
Budget universal A box or two of range ammo Cast aluminum, steel screw tip, two flat jaws A few sight changes on pistols with normal-force sights Strips on seized sights, slips on rounded slides, fixed clamp height
Mid-tier name brand Two gunsmith sight installs Steel push block and screw, full-capture or padded clamp, both shoes Buy-once tool for any pistol incl. M&P and Sig Price, weight
Gunsmith grade A set of quality night sights, or more Machined steel, model-specific shoe plates Shops, frequent sight work, expensive sights Price; often model-specific

Budget tier

The Patch universal, the NcSTAR VISM, the Kuber and a dozen near-identical aluminum tools. They work on Glocks, Tauruses, Caniks and most pistols whose sights come out with moderate force. The failure mode is stripped aluminum threads on a seized sight. Grease the screw and degrease the dovetail and they last. Our picks are in best budget sight pusher.

Mid tier

The Wheeler Handgun Sight Tool and the TRUGLO steel tool. Steel where the budget tools are aluminum, clamps that hold rounded and slim slides, both shoes in the box. This is the tier where the tool stops being the limiting factor. For anyone with more than one pistol or any tight-sighted pistol, it is the right amount of money.

Gunsmith grade

MGW. The Sight-Pro universal through MidwayUSA and Brownells, or the Glock-specific tools on Amazon, reviewed in our MGW review. Machined, precise, no flex. Worth it if you push sights for other people or install expensive tritium sights often. For one pistol it is more tool than the job needs.

Versus a gunsmith or a rental

One sight install at a shop costs less than a mid-tier pusher. Two cost about the same. Three and you have paid for the tool without owning it. Rentals from ranges look free but add trips, a deposit, and a shoe that may not fit your sight. The full break-even is in is a sight pusher worth it, and the overall ranking is best sight pusher tools.

FAQ

Why do some sight pushers cost five times more than others?

Steel versus aluminum in the load path, clamp design, and machining. The expensive ones do not strip or flex on seized sights.

Is a cheap sight pusher good enough?

For normal-force sights and a few uses, yes. For M&P 2.0, Sig factory sights or frequent use, no.
