Why the class is in Elm City and not Wilson

We teach from our own facility in Elm City, which lets us control the classroom and the range and keep class sizes where real instruction is possible. From Wilson that is a short drive: roughly 15 minutes from downtown, less from the north side of town, and an easy trip from Forest Hills, Five Points or the Raleigh Road corridor. We would rather students spend 15 minutes on the road than spend eight hours in a borrowed room with a crowded, rushed range session. If your church group, business or hunting club in Wilson has five or more people, we will come to you instead; see the private group section below.

What the class covers

The NC Concealed Handgun Carry class is the course required by G.S. 14-415.12(a)(4) to apply for a permit. The state curriculum runs a minimum of eight hours. We cover:

  • Handgun safety, handling, loading and unloading, and storage at home and in your vehicle.
  • North Carolina concealed carry law: eligibility, the application process, where you may and may not carry under G.S. 14-415.11(c), the duty to inform officers, the alcohol rule and reciprocity.
  • The law of self-defense and deadly force, including the Castle Doctrine and stand-your-ground statutes in G.S. 14-51.2 through 14-51.4, taught by someone who investigated real shootings for four decades.
  • Marksmanship fundamentals and the live-fire qualification on our range.
  • Practical carry: holster selection, drawing safely, and the decisions that keep you out of court.

Students leave with the training certificate the sheriff requires and, more importantly, a clear understanding of the law they are about to be responsible for.

Why Wilson students drive to us

There are closer and cheaper options for some people. Students choose us because of who is teaching. Chris Raper spent more than 40 years in law enforcement, has taught the North Carolina concealed carry course since 2006, is certified by the NC Department of Justice as a Firearms Safety Instructor, holds NRA Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun instructor credentials and the Range Safety Officer rating, and is a graduate of Massad Ayoob’s Lethal Force Institute. That last credential is what shapes our legal block: it is not a reading of the statute, it is an explanation of how a shooting is actually investigated and prosecuted in North Carolina. You can read the full list on our instructor qualifications page and hear from past students on the student feedback page.

Applying at the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office

After class, Wilson residents apply to the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office in Wilson. The process as of our last review:

  1. Complete the concealed handgun permit application online through the county’s permit portal and print it.
  2. Gather your documents: the original training certificate from our class, a valid NC driver’s license or ID showing your current Wilson County address, the signed mental health release forms, and, if applicable, your DD-214, naturalization certificate or permanent resident card.
  3. Bring everything to the Sheriff’s Office on a day the permit office accepts applications. Wilson County has historically handled new applications and renewals on Wednesdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.; confirm by calling 252-237-2118 before you go.
  4. Pay the $90 fee, which includes fingerprinting, and be fingerprinted on site.
  5. Wait for the background check. G.S. 14-415.15 gives the sheriff 45 days from a complete application.

We go over this process at the end of every class and answer county-specific questions. Renewals, five years later, are covered in our renewal guide.

Who the class is for

In a typical Wilson class we have first-time gun owners who bought a pistol after the purchase permit repeal and have never been shown how to handle it, experienced shooters who want the permit so they can carry legally in their truck, spouses taking the course together, retirees, nurses coming off shift at the hospital, and farmers and business owners who have carried for years and want to be sure they understand G.S. 14-51.3 before they ever need it. The pace works for all of them because the range portion is coached individually. If you are nervous about shooting in front of others, say so when you register and we will put you on the line with an instructor beside you. Our women’s handgun class is also a good first step for anyone who wants range time before the permit course.
